The Hutchinson gristmill was the first mill and built in 1740 by Cornelius Albertson. Built of logs, it was later burned by the Indians. William Hutchinson rebuilt the mill in 1850. The mill was operated by a waterwheel, and a millrace was built to bring the water from the brook. The original wooden wheel ws replaced by a hugh steel one. Although the wheel weighed about seven tons, it was so well balanced that the touch of a hand would move the wheel. The mill was once one of the leading flouring mills in the county and furnished buckwheat and wholewheat flour to the city by railroad. Also feeds for cattle and poultry were ground at the mill and a cider press was also in operation. Although the mill no longer remains, the millstones are still at or near the foundation.
